Tonights film choice may be one of the longest stretches I’ve made to pull in a non-traditional Christmas movie for our list. In defense of my choice the biggest moment of the film occurs on Christmas Day, theres lots of snow and Rocky’s Christmas wish comes true. I remember watching this movie as a kid and chanting USA, USA, USA, around the house until my mother threw a book at me. Its a grab the beer and pretzels kinda of Christmas and tonight we’re talking Rocky IV.
Theres a new Russian boxer in town by the name of Drago and he wants a piece of Rocky. Apollo decides he should come out of retirement and step up to the challenge instead of Rocky but at the big show in Vegas, Apollo is literally (and I hate using that word) beaten to death by the massive russian. Rocky decides to give up his title and travel to Russia just to get a chance to fight Drago, under the terms that he must live and train in Russia and that the fight will take place on Christmas Day in Moscow. Cue the training montage. The day of the fight arrives and at the start Rocky is getting his ass handed to him but after landing a punch that leaves a cut over Drago’s eye, Rocky starts to build momentum. The Italian Stallion pulls out the win but thanks to the beating from Drago he may never fight again…you know…until the sequel.
It may not be the most Christmasy of Christmas movies but it will inject you with a blast of patriotism and I’d be willing to bet in at least one house on Christmas eve it will be playing and it happens to be my favorite film in the series. For those reasons and the Christmas spirit inside us all, Rocky IV gets a ranking of: Eye Of The Tiger. Till next time friends, stay entertained.
