25 Films of Christmas: Die Hard

We made it friends, we made it through the first of the over eating, family visiting, nap taking, alcohol drinking, movie watching, Facebook posting back to back holidays with minimal casualties. Sure some of you should be ashamed of yourselves for acting like you did at those sales but we’re willing to overlook that for now, in the spirit of the coming holiday. And seeing as how you brought Christmas up, we had so much fun with Halloween that we decided to do twenty five movies of Christmas and to kick it off I chose one of my favorite Christmas films…Die Hard.

“Welcome to the party pal”

I know some of you out there will say Die Hard isn’t a Christmas movie, it doesn’t have children/adults learning the “true meaning” of Christmas or someone saving Santa from the clutches of evil. If you dig deeper and look past the terrorists, the explosions, the gun battles and one liners, you’ll find the story of a man who is willing to fly across the country, a man willing to walk on broken glass, a man who is willing to jump off of a building and all so he can spend Christmas Eve with his family. In case you’ve never enjoyed this festive, reason for the season, let me catch you up.

“Yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker”

Officer John McClane travels to L.A. for a Christmas reconciliation with his wife. He gets dropped off at the building where Holly (his wife) is attending her office Christmas party. After John freshens up and argues with his wife, Hans Gruber and his wacky bunch of terrorists storm the building and shit gets real. There are gun battles, battles of wits, battles of fists and the dad from Family Matters lends a helpful hand. The FBI shows up to screw the clichéd pooch and Willis saves the day as the coolest, wisecracking cop possibly in the cinematic world. Theres quite a bit between point A and point B that I didn’t discuss just in case you’ve never watched this film. Hopefully you give it a view and enjoy it.

It’s a tradition started with my pop, I have to watch this film at least once during the month of December, any viewings during the rest of the year are counted as bonuses. This is the film that made an action star out of Moonlightings Bruce Willis, the film by which I compare all other Bruce Willis films and its one of my favorite Christmas movies. For those reasons and more, Die Hard gets a ranking of: four and a half turtle doves. Till next time friends, stay entertained.
